Given the rapid and far-reaching changes AI drives in journalism, there is an urgent need to understand its past, present, and future implications. The preconference focused on bringing together scholars working on understanding and studying AI- and algorithm-based technologies concerning journalism.

The preconference, which had 14 presentations, was held as an off-site event at Metropolitan State University (MSU) Denver and successfully provided a rich environment for discussing the past, present, and future of the complex relationship between technologies and journalism from various perspectives. Moreover, the specific uses of (generative) AI in countries from the Global South and Asia, which have sometimes been late adopters of such technologies, were discussed.

Over 20 international and interdisciplinary scholars working on AI in the context of journalism joined the preconference to discuss the new possibilities and challenges of AI within the news ecosystem.
