Prof. Dr. Helle Sjøvaag

Besides publishing extensively on journalism, media industries, and the digital media environment within media pluralism contexts, Sjøvaag has led and participated in several interdisciplinary research projects between the information and social sciences. Currently, she leads the DataStructures project that examines the datafication of communicative power in Norway and the digital infrastructure that support the media industries. The Research Council of Norway funds the project.
Furthermore, she has served as a policy expert about the Nordic countries and is also an appointed expert to the European Council’s Committee to increase the resilience of the media (MSI-RES). Sjøvaag’s latest book is The markets for news: Enduring structures in the age of business model disruption (Routledge, 2022), which focuses on the impact of AI and platform economics on the news industries.
