Prof. Dr. Natali Helberger

University of Amsterdam

Besides her position as a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Amsterdam, Natali Helberger is also affiliated with the Institute for Information Law (IViR), one of the leading information law institutes worldwide. Over the past five years, her research has focused on how AI and automated decision-making transform society and their implications for law and governance. She is particularly interested in developing a normative perspective on using AI in journalism and questions of platform governance.

Helberger is a member of the Reuters Institute for Journalism advisory board at Oxford. As rapporteur and member of the Council of Europe's Expert Committee on Resilience in Journalism, Helberger is developing guidance on fundamental rights aspects of journalistic AI. She is one of the founders and the Director of the AI, Media & Democracy Lab, and since 2022 the Scientific Director of the Algosoc (Public Values in the Algorithmic Society) Gravitation Consortium.
